The inaugural issue, titled A New Era of Excellence<\/em>, reviews developments from the 2025-26 school year, including academic gains, expanded opportunities for students, campus improvements and efforts to strengthen school safety.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss announced the publication in a message to the BHUSD community, describing it as a way to bring together the district\u2019s progress and tell the stories behind its schools.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cBHUSD Insight brings the story of our schools to life,\u201d Cherniss said. \u201cEach issue will highlight the people, progress, programs, and achievements shaping the future of education in Beverly Hills.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n

The Beverly Hills Police Department is increasing traffic enforcement during National Speed Prevention Month, with additional officers patrolling city streets for drivers who are speeding or traveling too fast for current conditions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The July operation is part of the department\u2019s \u201cSlow the Fast Down\u201d campaign, which asks motorists to follow posted limits and adjust their speed based on traffic, weather, visibility and road conditions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

According to figures cited by BHPD, 11,288 people were killed in speeding-related crashes across the United States in 2024. Speed was a factor in 29% of the country\u2019s traffic fatalities that year. California recorded 1,139 speeding-related deaths during the same period.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey also ranked speeding and aggressive driving as the leading safety concern among participating drivers. Police said even small increases in speed can reduce a motorist\u2019s reaction time while increasing the force and potential severity of a collision.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cSpeeding is dangerous and puts everyone at risk,\u201d Beverly Hills Police Chief Max Subin said. \u201cYour daily choice to drive within the speed limit protects everyone in our community. Risky driving behaviors like speeding continue to cause preventable tragedies on California roads.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n

BHPD is asking drivers to plan ahead and allow additional travel time, particularly when traveling through school and construction zones. Motorists should also avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating, weaving through traffic and making abrupt lane changes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Drivers can still be traveling at an unsafe speed even when they are below the posted limit. Heavy traffic, poor visibility, construction and other changing conditions may require motorists to slow down further.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Veteran public defender and former Beverly Hills Rent Stabilization Commissioner Donna Tryfman has advanced to the November general election after finishing first in the primary for Los Angeles County Superior Court Office No. 131.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Tryfman received 612,858 votes, or 37.31%, according to the final Los Angeles County election results. David Ross placed second with 546,032 votes, or 33.24%. Because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, Tryfman and Ross will compete in the Nov. 3 runoff.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Carlos Dammeier finished third with 245,969 votes, or 14.97%, followed by Troy Slaten with 237,894 votes, or 14.48%.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Tryfman has worked as a Los Angeles County deputy public defender for more than 30 years. She currently serves in the office\u2019s Major Crimes Division, where she handles special-circumstance homicide cases. During her career, she has completed more than 100 trials and served as a temporary judge in traffic, small claims and unlawful detainer matters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Her professional experience also includes serving as president of the Public Defenders Association, supervising attorneys in juvenile court and mentoring young people through Teen Court programs. In Beverly Hills, Tryfman served as both a commissioner and chair of the city\u2019s Rent Stabilization Commission.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Tryfman said her campaign would remain focused on courtroom experience, judicial temperament, integrity and independence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cI am not running to be one group\u2019s judge,\u201d Tryfman said. \u201cI am running to be everyone\u2019s judge. Every person who enters a courtroom deserves to be heard, treated with dignity, and judged fairly under the law.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n

Tryfman\u2019s campaign has received endorsements from labor organizations, legal groups, elected officials and newspaper editorial boards. Supporters listed by the campaign include Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, former Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley, the Los Angeles Association of Deputy District Attorneys, the Mexican American Bar Association and several regional Democratic clubs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The campaign has also announced endorsements from the Western States Regional Council of Carpenters, UNITE HERE Local 11, IBEW Local 11 and Teamsters Local 25. Several Southern California newspaper editorial boards endorsed Tryfman during the primary, including the Los Angeles Daily News, Pasadena Star-News, Daily Breeze and Metropolitan News-Enterprise.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Slaten, who finished fourth in the primary and serves as a California administrative law judge, has since endorsed Tryfman in the runoff.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Ross is also a veteran defense attorney and serves as a senior trial deputy in the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender\u2019s Office. The November contest will determine who fills the open judicial seat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Board Policy 6163.47, Intentional Technology Use in the Classroom, Digital Learning, and Artificial Intelligence Education, was approved in a 5-0 vote following three public Board study sessions and community input.<\/p>

The policy is built around the principle that classroom technology should support instruction without replacing direct teaching, handwriting, physical books, mathematical computation by hand, classroom discussion, oral communication, experiential learning and independent reasoning.<\/p>

It protects our students' natural creativity and curiosity during their younger years while providing greater access to technology and AI education as they mature, preparing them to lead in the future. By protecting foundational learning while advancing future readiness, BHUSD is setting a standard for school districts across the nation.\"<\/blockquote>

Under the policy, students in transitional kindergarten through second grade will not be assigned one-to-one devices. Technology use in those grades will be limited to required assessments, teacher-led activities and legally required accommodations.<\/p>

Students in third through fifth grade will continue to prioritize handwriting, physical books, paper-based mathematics and direct interaction with teachers. They will also participate in a dedicated Technology and Innovation Program covering coding, robotics, digital citizenship, media literacy, internet safety and the fundamentals of artificial intelligence.<\/p>

Middle school students will receive annual instruction in AI literacy, digital ethics, cybersecurity, coding, research, media literacy and responsible digital citizenship.<\/p>

At the high school level, technology will be used for advanced academic work, college readiness and career preparation. The policy maintains an emphasis on writing, discussion, critical thinking, independent learning and original student work.<\/p>

\"Technology should never replace the essential work of learning,\" Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss said. \"This policy removes unnecessary screen time so our classrooms can remain laser-focused on writing, experiential learning, critical thinking, and the foundational power of pen and paper. At the same time, BHUSD is advancing AI literacy, ethical use, and prompt engineering toward a graduation requirement so our students are prepared not simply to enter the future, but to lead and shape it.\"<\/blockquote>

The policy also restricts access to gaming and non-curricular websites on district devices and calls for families to receive weekly summaries of student device use.<\/p>

Teachers will be prohibited from using artificial intelligence to grade student work, assign scores, produce final evaluative comments or replace their professional judgment. Those restrictions preserve direct teacher responsibility for evaluating student performance as AI tools become more common in schools.<\/p>

Board President Manouchehri and Vice President Sigalie Sabag were designated to guide the policy's development during the Board's review process. The final framework was then approved by all five Board members.<\/p>

The policy builds upon Resolution No. 2025-2026-14, Using Technology with Intention: Establishing Guidelines for Student Screen Time, which the Board approved in March 2026. Applications are now open for the 2026-27 Team Beverly Hills class, a city program that gives participants an inside look at Beverly Hills government and municipal operations.<\/p>

The city will accept applications through Friday, Aug. 21. The program begins in October and continues through March, with sessions covering Public Works, Emergency Management, Information Technology, Community Services and Public Safety.<\/p>

The upcoming class will include 50 residents. The City Council will appoint 30 participants, 18 will be chosen through a random lottery, and the Beverly Hills Unified School District will select two.<\/p>

Five representatives from the Beverly Hills business community will also participate. All five business representatives will be appointed by the City Council, bringing the total class size to 55.<\/p>

Established in 1996, Team Beverly Hills combines classroom sessions with interactive visits and presentations intended to explain how city departments operate. More than 800 residents have completed the program, according to the city.<\/p>

The city also reports that more than 70 percent of current Beverly Hills elected officials and commissioners are Team Beverly Hills alumni, making the program a common entry point for residents seeking greater involvement in local government.<\/p>

In 2021, Barton received the Fred C. Cunningham Award for Distinguished Service from the Beverly Hills City Council, the city\u2019s highest recognition for outstanding service to the community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
