Beverly Hills Police Department Captain Max Subin has been named the next Chief of Police for the City of Beverly Hills, bringing nearly three decades of local law enforcement experience to the department’s top post.
Subin, a 27-year veteran of BHPD, will officially assume the role effective June 27, following the retirement of Chief Mark Stainbrook on June 26.
Subin joined the Beverly Hills Police Department in 1999 and has served in several key assignments, including Patrol, Crime Suppression, the Detective Bureau, Community Relations and the Professional Standards unit.
He was promoted to Captain in 2021 and currently oversees the Administrative Services Division, which includes Personnel, Records, Communications and Budget.
“I am very pleased that Max will be leading the department he has served for almost three decades,” said incoming City Manager Ryan Gohlich. “Max has built incredibly strong relationships throughout Beverly Hills and, as a longtime member of the department, shares our community values and understands what makes BHPD so special.”
As police chief, Subin will lead a department with 154 sworn personnel and 112 civilian staff members.
“I am thankful to Ryan, the City Council, members of BHPD and the community for the support and trust they have placed in me,” Subin said. “I am proud and humbled to work with the dedicated members of this department and pledge that the safety of this City will always be priority number one.”
Subin earned both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. He also attended the California Police Chiefs Executive Leadership Institute at the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University in 2021.
His appointment marks a return to department-rooted leadership at BHPD, with the city selecting a longtime Beverly Hills officer who has served across multiple divisions and built relationships within the department and the community.
Subin succeeds Stainbrook, who announced his retirement after nearly five years with the City of Beverly Hills.
