Beverly Hills Teen Arrested on Suspicion of Murder in Alley Stabbing

In a major development following Sunday's deadly confrontation in Beverly Hills, police have identified 19-year-old resident Conoray Lawantara as the man arrested on suspicion of murder after another man suffered a fatal neck wound in a North Palm Drive alley.

The Beverly Hills Police Department announced the arrest Monday night in an updated media release, saying Lawantara was taken into custody on suspicion of murder under California Penal Code 187(a) "based on the evidence gathered during the investigation."

Lawantara remains hospitalized due to an injury sustained during the incident. BHPD said his arraignment date will be determined at a later time.

The confrontation began at approximately 11:39 p.m. Sunday, August 30, when officers were called to the alley of the 400 block of North Palm Drive for an altercation involving two men. Officers found one man suffering from a wound to his neck. Beverly Hills Fire Department paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he later died.

New witness accounts reported by television news outlets describe a sequence substantially different from the initial social media narrative surrounding the confrontation. Neighbors told CBS Los Angeles that the deceased man, whom they believed to be homeless, had been going through trash when Lawantara confronted him. Witnesses said surveillance video from a nearby apartment building shows Lawantara following the man before the violence began.

KTLA reported a similar account from a neighbor who said Lawantara was bothered by the man going through trash and followed him while telling him he should not be there. The witness said the man continued walking and later sat on a couch in the alley before the confrontation escalated.

Those accounts have not been publicly confirmed by BHPD, and police have not officially identified the deceased man or confirmed his housing status.

Lawantara remained hospitalized following the deadly confrontation, according to BHPD. Police have not publicly detailed the nature of his injuries or the circumstances in which they were sustained.

The department continues to investigate what led to the deadly encounter and has said no other individuals are believed to have been involved.

"Our detectives are conducting a thorough and diligent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident," Police Chief Max Subin said.
