BHPD Adds Impaired-Driving Patrols Ahead of Labor Day

The Beverly Hills Police Department will put additional officers on city streets beginning Aug. 19 as part of an increased impaired-driving enforcement effort leading into the Labor Day holiday.

The added patrols will focus on drivers suspected of operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs and are part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7 this year.

Police Chief Max Subin urged residents and visitors to make transportation plans before drinking as summer celebrations continue.

"Enjoying the last days of summer should be all about fun, and that starts with making safe choices before making plans," Subin said.

BHPD is also reminding drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and cannabis products can affect a person's ability to safely operate a vehicle. The department recommends that anyone using a medication carrying a driving warning arrange for a sober driver.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show 11,904 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes nationwide in 2024, averaging approximately one death every 44 minutes.

Along with avoiding impaired driving, BHPD is encouraging motorists to wear seat belts, avoid distractions, observe posted speed limits, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists and take breaks during longer trips. Anyone who observes a driver who appears to be impaired is encouraged to call 911.

The Beverly Hills enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
