Only about one in five California districts has a majority of students meeting standards in both English and math. BHUSD ranks ninth statewide in math gains among qualifying districts.

Beverly Hills Unified School District's place among California's top 10 districts for math gains deserves recognition. At a time when most districts still fall short of having a majority of students meet standards in both English and math, BHUSD is showing the kind of progress families should expect from their public schools.

EdSource's statewide comparison, prepared by Yuxuan Xie using California Department of Education data, lists BHUSD ninth in annual math proficiency gains among districts with at least 500 students tested. Its chart shows the share of BHUSD students meeting or exceeding math standards rising from 62.8% in 2024-25 to 68.7% in 2025-26, an increase of 5.9 percentage points.

BHUSD also has the highest current math proficiency rate among the 10 districts in that chart. It is the only Los Angeles County district on the list. That combination matters: Beverly Hills is posting one of the largest increases while already achieving a higher proficiency rate than the other districts listed.

The broader statewide findings put that achievement in perspective. EdSource reports that only about one in five California districts had a majority of tested students meeting standards in both English and math. That means clearing the majority threshold separately in each subject. BHUSD cleared it comfortably in both, with roughly three-quarters of tested students reaching English proficiency and more than two-thirds reaching math proficiency.

Table of the ten California districts with the largest annual math proficiency gains. Beverly Hills Unified is ninth, increasing from 62.8% to 68.7%.Beverly Hills Unified ranks ninth among California districts with at least 500 students tested in this comparison of annual math proficiency gains.

The state's published results also show BHUSD well ahead of California's overall math proficiency rate of 38.35%. Compared with the previous year's results, BHUSD's math gain exceeded those of Santa Monica-Malibu Unified, Culver City Unified and Los Angeles Unified. BHUSD also recorded the highest current math proficiency rate among those four districts.

Those nearby districts improved too. EdSource reports that approximately 65% of districts with at least 500 students tested improved in math. The statewide concern is that achievement remains too low in many places even as scores rise. BHUSD's distinction is the combination of stronger proficiency and one of California's largest annual gains.

The improvement also extends beyond a single year. In its October academic update, BHUSD reported that districtwide math proficiency rose from 57.74% in 2024 to 68.72% in 2026. Science rose from 42.68% to 56.44% over the same period. The district also identified tutoring, support for classroom instruction and district-funded examinations among its student supports.

These results give Beverly Hills families a substantial reason for confidence. Students and educators are delivering measurable improvement, and the district's place in EdSource's top-10 math gains chart provides recognition beyond its own announcements. In our view, that progress deserves clear credit and continued support.

There is still work ahead for students who have not yet reached proficiency. The next task is to extend the improvement to them and sustain it across future years. But the current direction deserves to be acknowledged: BHUSD is raising achievement, outpacing its nearby comparison districts in math gains and giving its community real results to celebrate.
