Brown, who was in Los Angeles for NBA All-Star weekend, had organized a panel discussion in Beverly Hills focused on culture and creative leadership. According to individuals present at the event, police arrived and ended the gathering after determining the proper permits had not been secured.
Brown later criticized the City of Beverly Hills on X, writing, "Beverly Hills is so trash I’m offended had a great panel about the future of culture with great guest people worked hard for this how dare yall"
Video shared by Brown on Instagram, which has close to 4m followers, showed him speaking with officers as the event was being shut down, and criticized the City of Beverly Hills, saying he was offended by how the evening was handled after what he described as a meaningful panel discussion that guests had prepared for.
“We’re just trying to have an event, a panel talking about culture, talking about the future, talking about leadership. And for whatever reason, I feel like we’re being targeted,” Brown said during the exchange with officers as police shut down the event. “I know I play for the Celtics, and I know we’re in LA. But hey, I didn’t think y’all would do me like this,” he said in the video.
Event attendees said the panel had drawn a group of creatives and professionals for a discussion centered on the future of culture, and that the shutdown came as a surprise to organizers and guests.
The incident drew attention online due to Brown’s public profile and his long-standing involvement in community-based conversations and social issues. Brown has previously spoken about the importance of creating spaces for dialogue around culture, leadership, and civic engagement.
In a statement posted to the City of Beverly Hills’ official Instagram account, officials said the event permit had been denied and that police shut down the gathering after organizers proceeded with the event despite the denial.
Brown remained in the Los Angeles area following the incident to participate in NBA All-Star weekend activities.
