With the appointment of Steve Lawson and Devon Saxon, the BHUSD Board of Education reinforces its principled commitment to student development, competitive excellence, and inter-agency cooperation.

In a decisive move that reflects both strategic foresight and steadfast values, the Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education has approved the appointments of Steve Lawson as Director of Athletics and JPA, and Devon Saxon as Assistant Director. This leadership team signals a renewed dedication to ensuring that BHUSD student-athletes are not only well-supported but also inspired to excel on and off the field.

“These are the right people at the right time,” said Board of Education President Rachelle Marcus, affirming what many in the community already recognize—principled leadership and deep experience are the foundation for sustainable excellence.

Lawson, a decorated U.S. Army veteran and championship-level coach, brings decades of experience and a reputation for results. As a U.S. Open Champion and Pan American Games medalist, his athletic credentials are unmatched. More importantly, his 27-year tenure at El Dorado High School—where he coached 18 individual CIF champions—proves his commitment to long-term student success through discipline, mentorship, and accountability.

His founding of SCWAY (State of California Wrestling Alliance for Youth), now serving over 2,800 athletes, is not just a testament to his vision but also to his conservative belief in the formative power of sports. SCWAY’s focus on coach training and safety mirrors the very values that guide BHUSD’s mission: structure, character, and responsibility.
“Steve’s background is extraordinary,”
noted Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss.
“He is not only a champion athlete and a veteran, but a visionary builder of programs who has proven time and again that he knows how to lead teams, inspire young people, and drive excellence at every level.”
Lawson will be joined by Devon Saxon, a force in competitive cheer with a proven record of success. Saxon’s leadership of Birmingham Community Charter High School’s cheer program earned six CIF-LA Division I titles and national acclaim. His recognition as 2024 California Cheerleading Coach of the Year confirms that he knows how to build champions with heart, rigor, and integrity.

Beyond coaching, Saxon’s experience in school operations and logistics offers BHUSD a rare combination of organizational skill and student-centered vision. As a CIF-LA Cheerleading Co-Coordinator, his ability to manage large-scale programs will ensure smooth operations and fair opportunities for all student-athletes.

In overseeing the Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) with the City of Beverly Hills, both leaders will ensure that school athletics remain not just strong, but well-integrated with broader community resources. Their appointment reflects a mature understanding of civic partnership, where city and school priorities work hand in hand.

The BHUSD Board of Education deserves credit for making a forward-thinking, values-driven choice. With Lawson and Saxon at the helm, the district’s athletic future is not just secure—it’s poised for a new era of respect, performance, and purpose.

This moment marks more than a staffing change; it’s a commitment to excellence in every sense of the word. As students prepare for seasons ahead, they will do so under leaders who believe in them, challenge them, and lead by example.
