At the 2025 Opening Day for Beverly Hills Unified School District staff, Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss delivered a wide-ranging address focused on building human connection, expanding academic support, and strengthening both physical and emotional safety in schools.

Speaking to a packed auditorium at El Rodeo Elementary School, Dr. Cherniss urged teachers and staff to make relationships the cornerstone of the year ahead. He shared stories from across the district, from special education classrooms to advanced academic programs, to highlight the power of trust and personal investment in student success.

In his remarks, Dr. Cherniss set an ambitious yet grounded tone for the new year, focusing on high expectations for both students and staff. He emphasized that BHUSD’s mission is rooted in delivering top tier education while maintaining fiscal health and transparency.

“That won’t happen unless your students care about you. And they won’t care about you unless they know you care about them.”

Dr. Cherniss acknowledged the hard work of teachers, administrators, and support staff, noting that the district’s successes depend on a unified team approach. He called for a commitment to consistent standards, saying that every classroom must reflect the same high expectations.

“We are going to offer free after school, before school, during school support programs for our students. And we are going to pay you to help make that happen to support these kids so all kids have the opportunities to be a grade level or above.”

He also addressed the importance of transparency and accountability, both in financial matters and in measuring student progress. Dr. Cherniss stressed that data will guide decision making, ensuring resources are allocated where they will make the greatest impact.

The speech closed with an appeal for positivity and unity among staff, reinforcing the idea that a shared vision is essential for success. Dr. Cherniss left the audience with a reminder that the work of education is not just about meeting standards, but about shaping the future of the community.
