In a bold and principled display of moral leadership, the Beverly Hills City Council on Tuesday evening unanimously passed a landmark resolution condemning the Islamic Republic of Iran’s brutal crackdown on peaceful protestors and standing squarely with the Iranian people in their pursuit of freedom, human rights, and economic justice.

This is more than symbolic. It is a reaffirmation of Beverly Hills’ commitment to liberty, human dignity, and global responsibility: values that transcend borders and remind us that local governance can wield meaningful influence in an increasingly interconnected world.

“As the first Iranian American woman to serve in this role, I felt a responsibility to be a voice for our community,” said Beverly Hills Mayor Sharona Nazarian. “For nearly five decades, the people of Iran have endured repression, censorship, religious persecution, and state violence. Today, they are also facing a devastating economic collapse, widespread poverty, and a severe lack of basic necessities. This is a humanitarian crisis, and silence is not an option. We urge the federal government to provide meaningful support. A free Iran means a safer region and a safer world without terror. I am proud of our City for choosing to lead with courage and for unanimously passing the first resolution in the nation in support of the people of Iran. May they know peace, dignity, and freedom.”

Mayor Nazarian’s words strike at the heart of what courageous local leadership looks like in times of international crisis. Her historic role as the first Iranian American woman to serve as Mayor of Beverly Hills is not only symbolic, it is impactful, especially to a community that includes many who fled tyranny in search of freedom and opportunity.

The resolution passed by the Council condemns the regime's use of violent and oppressive tactics, including internet blackouts, mass arrests, and the targeting of innocent civilians with lethal force. The staggering numbers, between 12,000 to 20,000 reported civilian deaths, are more than statistics. They are a wake-up call to the free world.

In calling on the federal government to take decisive action, the resolution does not mince words. It urges continued pressure on the regime and support for the brave Iranians risking their lives for a better future.

“The City of Beverly Hills calls upon the government of the United States to continue supporting the Iranian people’s demands for freedom and to maintain maximum pressure on the Iranian regime, including protecting the brave, pro-freedom protestors.”

The resolution goes even further, calling for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to be brought to justice, a clear sign that Beverly Hills is not content with lip service, but instead demands accountability, justice, and moral clarity.

In a world often marred by political ambiguity and cowardice, Beverly Hills has chosen a different path. It has chosen conviction, character, and an unwavering defense of the innocent. This act of solidarity may not solve Iran’s crisis overnight, but it sends an unmistakable message: Beverly Hills stands on the side of freedom.

Let this serve as a reminder that even in a small city, conscience still matters. Through resolute action, community values, and steadfast leadership, Beverly Hills once again proves that it is not only a beacon of tradition and excellence, but a voice for justice in a world that sorely needs it.
