Beverly Hills to Hold October 7 Moment of Remembrance

Beverly Hills will mark the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel with a morning Moment of Remembrance at Rexford Mini Park, inviting residents to gather with members of the City Council.

The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, at 6:45 a.m. at 362 N. Rexford Drive, according to the city's announcement. The gathering will honor the victims of the attack.

The observance continues a series of local commemorations that began after the Hamas attack. A city staff report records that a Shabbat table was placed in front of City Hall with settings for the hostages, while flags representing the nationalities of those killed were installed in Beverly Gardens Park.

On the first anniversary in 2024, the Israeli-American Civic Action Network hosted a sunrise commemoration in Beverly Gardens Park. Councilmember John Mirisch served as host, and then-Mayor Lester Friedman spoke on behalf of the city. The gathering included prayers, a moment of silence and the sounding of a shofar, according to the organization's account.

In October 2025, the city also presented an earlier permanent memorial design at a ceremony in the Beverly Hills Public Library. Then-Mayor Dr. Sharona Nazarian framed the project as a lasting commitment to remembrance.

"Oct. 7 was meant to destroy, but this memorial is built to endure. This is who we are," Nazarian said at that ceremony.

The proposed permanent memorial is planned for the south side of the library at the northeast corner of Rexford Drive and Burton Way, across from the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden. That project is separate from the upcoming gathering at Rexford Mini Park.

The city's current project page identifies the conceptually approved design as "Light Shared Between Us" by atelier eyster architecture. The design uses sunlight passing through an inscribed wall to illuminate victims' names. The city says a mockup is being created and project documents are being prepared.

Beverly Hills has committed $500,000 toward the memorial, with its Community Charitable Foundation soliciting donations for the remaining costs. The current concept differs from the staircase sculpture presented in 2025; the city has not announced a dedication of the permanent monument as part of this year's morning observance.
