BHPD Steps Up Speed Enforcement During National Speed Prevention Month

The Beverly Hills Police Department is increasing traffic enforcement during National Speed Prevention Month, with additional officers patrolling city streets for drivers who are speeding or traveling too fast for current conditions.

The July operation is part of the department’s “Slow the Fast Down” campaign, which asks motorists to follow posted limits and adjust their speed based on traffic, weather, visibility and road conditions.

According to figures cited by BHPD, 11,288 people were killed in speeding-related crashes across the United States in 2024. Speed was a factor in 29% of the country’s traffic fatalities that year. California recorded 1,139 speeding-related deaths during the same period.

The 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey also ranked speeding and aggressive driving as the leading safety concern among participating drivers. Police said even small increases in speed can reduce a motorist’s reaction time while increasing the force and potential severity of a collision.

“Speeding is dangerous and puts everyone at risk,” Beverly Hills Police Chief Max Subin said. “Your daily choice to drive within the speed limit protects everyone in our community. Risky driving behaviors like speeding continue to cause preventable tragedies on California roads.”

BHPD is asking drivers to plan ahead and allow additional travel time, particularly when traveling through school and construction zones. Motorists should also avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating, weaving through traffic and making abrupt lane changes.

Drivers can still be traveling at an unsafe speed even when they are below the posted limit. Heavy traffic, poor visibility, construction and other changing conditions may require motorists to slow down further.

Although the additional enforcement operation is taking place during July, the department said its call for safer speeds will continue beyond National Speed Prevention Month.
