As students finish summer break, BHUSD leaders met at Hawthorne for focused preparation. With new staff and fresh goals, the district appears ready to prioritize academic strength and clear leadership.

This week, while classrooms remained quiet, the Beverly Hills Unified School District gathered its leadership team at the Hawthorne campus for a retreat aimed at launching the school year with clarity and purpose.

Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss welcomed administrators from every campus, many of whom are new to their roles. In recent years, BHUSD has seen its share of transitions, but this retreat seemed designed to reset the tone.

“Our commitment to educational excellence begins long before the first day of school,” Cherniss said. “We use this time to come together as a leadership team to align our vision, sharpen our goals and prepare to support every student, every day.”

It is a welcome message. After a year marked by both challenges and progress, the district appears ready to focus on instructional quality, operational readiness, and student-centered leadership. This is what families expect, and what students need.

Strong preparation does not guarantee success. But it does reflect a commitment to discipline, responsibility, and shared goals. The retreat covered key areas such as academic planning and staff support. Done right, this kind of investment can lead to steadier campuses, clearer classroom expectations, and better results.

“Although school’s out, our leadership team is all in,” Cherniss said. “We are energized, united and ready to make this year one of the best yet.”

That message now faces a public test. Families will be looking for signs that this energy leads to action, more focused instruction, stronger campus culture, and support that meets students where they are.

Still, the tone of this retreat was promising. With new leaders in the room and clear objectives on the table, BHUSD has a chance to begin the year with unity and resolve. The true measure will come when the school year begins, but this start sends the right signal.
