The first phase of the Metro D Line subway extension will open May 8, adding three new Wilshire Boulevard stations and bringing rail service to the edge of Beverly Hills in roughly 20 minutes from Union Station.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced that the first phase of the Metro D Line subway extension will open to riders on May 8.

The Metro D Line, formerly known as the Purple Line, currently runs from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to Wilshire/Western in Koreatown. The newly completed segment will extend service west along Wilshire Boulevard, adding three stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.

Metro officials stated that once the extension begins service, riders will be able to travel from Union Station to the Wilshire/La Cienega station, located at the eastern edge of Beverly Hills, in approximately 20 minutes.

In a public statement released by Metro, Board Chair Fernando Dutra said the expansion will improve access to cultural and commercial destinations along the Wilshire corridor and move the system closer to the Westside. He also noted that the buildout is expected to support regional connectivity in advance of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including access to the planned Olympic Village at UCLA.

Metro Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Wiggins, in a separate public statement, said the extended service will improve travel between downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills while highlighting the design and artwork incorporated into the new stations.

The D Line extension is being delivered in three phases. The second phase, currently under construction and tentatively scheduled to open in spring 2027, will add stations within Beverly Hills and Century City. The third phase, projected for fall 2027, is planned to extend service to UCLA and the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs campus.

The full extension project carries an estimated cost of nearly $10 billion. When complete, it will connect downtown Los Angeles to Westwood entirely by subway, creating a continuous underground transit corridor beneath Wilshire Boulevard.
