Mayor Corman Meets Italian Consul, Talks Beverly Hills Cultural Ties

Beverly Hills Mayor Craig Corman welcomed Italian Consul General Raffaella Valentini to City Hall for a discussion about cultural exchange, tourism and future partnerships, continuing a relationship that has brought Italian diplomats, musicians and athletes to the city.

In a September 14 social media announcement shared with the Italian consulate, the city said the meeting took place the previous week and focused on the longstanding connections between Beverly Hills and Italy. Valentini represents Italy as its consul general in Los Angeles.

The conversation follows several public events that have connected the two communities through music, sport and cultural programming.

On July 3, 2024, the Carabinieri Cadet Legion Military Band performed in Beverly Gardens Park as part of celebrations surrounding the Italian naval training ship Amerigo Vespucci's visit to the Port of Los Angeles. Beverly Hills was among the cities hosting performances associated with the visit.

The gathering brought senior Italian officials to the city, including Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Mariangela Zappia, Italy's ambassador to the United States. Then-Mayor Lester Friedman and Valentini delivered opening remarks. Corman, then a councilmember, attended alongside other members of the Beverly Hills City Council.

The park concert gave residents a public connection to a diplomatic visit centered on the ship's international tour, bringing Italian military musicians into one of Beverly Hills' most recognizable civic spaces.

That relationship continued through a different kind of gathering on September 17, 2025, when Roxbury Park hosted the second edition of Italian Sports Day in the World. Organized in collaboration with Italian institutions in Los Angeles and the Italian National Olympic Committee, known as CONI, the event connected athletic achievement with science, industry and cultural exchange.

Featured guests included Italian national soccer team player Sofia Cantore, Fabrizio Gamberini representing Italian footwear company Vibram, and Dr. Maura Fanti, a researcher at USC's Longevity Institute. Italian sports journalist Veronica Maffei moderated the discussion.

The program also looked ahead to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games, linking the two host countries through a discussion of sport and international cooperation.

"Italian Sports Day is more than a celebration—it's a strategic moment to reflect on how sport connects people, economies, and futures," Valentini said in the consulate's account of the 2025 event.

Then-Mayor Sharona Nazarian welcomed the gathering and expressed support for continued cooperation between Beverly Hills and its Italian partners.

Corman's latest meeting with Valentini returns that relationship to the City Hall agenda, with tourism and cultural exchange among the subjects identified by the city. Its announcement described opportunities for stronger future partnerships but did not identify a specific new program or agreement.

The earlier events provide concrete examples of what that cooperation has involved: international visitors meeting local officials, public performances in city parks and discussions bringing together athletes, researchers and business representatives. The latest conversation places those existing connections at the center of discussions about what comes next.
